Illustration Redraw Part 2

So I finished the redraw of the other illustration for Psytonal. This is the image or the back of their T-shirt. Hopefully I can nab myself one :)

So whats next on my list. I have to finish a drawing of a tall ship for a tattoo. That one has been sitting for a while.

Illustration Re-Draw

This week I have been doing a redraw of an illustration for a heavy metal band "Psytonal". They only had a small low resolution image and required it to be redrawn so that it was 14" x 17" for a t-shirt. This is the image that will be on the front of the shirt.

I am still working on the image that will go on the back of the shirt. Its a rainy day so today is perfect for spending some quality time with photoshop.

Visual Diary

I learned of the online courses that Jane Davenport is doing and decided to participate in them starting with the Draw Happy Mini Workshop. They are quite cool and making me feel a bit inspired to get my visual diary going and have some fun with drawing faces, etc.

I started making a book about 18 months ago but got waylaid and found it in my art stash when looking for a sketchbook last night. So I promptly cut a variety of paper to fit the cover that was mostly complete, grabbed a few clamps from the shed and the drill and put it all together. Slapped on a few finishing touches of paint and ink and presto...its done! I do need to put some Modge Podge or something over it though for a bit of protection.

I started drawing some faces last night, just some quick ones and building up on them with water colour pencils and ink etc. Doodling faces is not a strong point of mine by any stretch of the imagination, which is why I wanted to do this, to just relax and stop thinking every damn line has to be perfect. So the initial ones were crap and I was like feeling a little discouraged about how out of practise I am... but then with a little time and loving (a bit of make-up you could say) each face got a bit better! I am not finished all the faces yet but will do a few more tonight.

2 more sleeps until my mummy gets here to visit me for a couple of weeks... so excited!!! Maybe I can get her hooked up with a visual diary too as she likes to draw...

Photorealism; New Project Started

Happy New Year to all :)

I am absolutely loving my new Intuos 4 Tablet and using it with Photoshop. After feeling inspired and motivated by the work of Alexia Sinclair (Fine Art Photographer and Digital Artist), I decided to stop procrastinating and learn more techniques and just do it and see where it takes me. Below is a little video of the creation of her face.

I am feeling a lot of good will come out of 2012, lots of positive choices and changes. :)

King Neptune Initiation Certificate

This is a certificate I did for an equator crossing ceremony that Steve had onboard the Far Fosna for some of the crew that hadn't been initiated into King Neptune's Court. As it has been such a long standing tradition on boats (although probably not so much now) I wanted to keep the certificate in an old fashioned style. It was a bit of fun putting it together. :)

"Ice Queen" Beaded Bracelet

After using a bit of colour in previous bracelets of this beaded style I decided to do one with shades of white and silver. As well as the thousands seed beads I used fresh water pearls, mother of pearl beads, clear Swarovski hearts, cubes and bicones (alabaster white and clear), Stirling Silver brushed beads, and clear quartz beads. It also has a Stirling Silver clasp.

Need to find a few more techniques to try out with this type of beading. I am wanting to create something with Polymer Clay and beads, think I need to break out the sketchbook and get creative!

"Outback Sunset" Beaded Bracelet

So having done one beaded bracelet, I thought I would do another to see if the novelty had worn off yet. This one was a bit quicker to make (probably due to the fact I wasn't second guessing myself so much) and it is slightly narrower than the "Rockpool" Bracelet. This particular bracelet is made up of around 2,350 beads. I love blues and greens but thought it would make a nice change to make something with some nice warm reds and orange tones. I have called this one "Outback Sunset" because the colours just suggest that to me (sounds a bit less weird than saying "It spoke to me, and told me its name when I asked!". :)

Old Sailing Ship Sketch

This is a sketch I am working on at the moment for a tattoo for a crusty old sailor (he is actually nice young Mate who works with Steve). I need to bring the detail down a bit more on the bow as it may get a bit confused when it comes to being inked. Background details need to be clarified too but I want to get something other than jewellery on my blog as it has been a while since I put some other sort of artwork up. Not a very big post, but I am working on a digital illustration and amping to get back into it. :)

"Rock Pool" - Hand-sewn beaded bracelet.

I decided to learn something new this week and dragged out a tutorial on a beaded bracelet. I saw a similar bracelet on Etsy and loved it so knew I had to have a go. I found the recipe on Fire Mountain Gems and set to it. The whole bracelet is made from hand sewing beads together. The base is made up of 344 beads that have been square stitched together. After sewing on the clasp with more beads, the embellishment begins. Each of those 344 beads on the base has a loop of 11 beads stitched onto it. There are about 4,176 assorted beads on this bracelet. I thought it may take a couple of days to working on it between chores but I think it was more like four days. I didn't get to impatient with it either (I am not the most patient person in the world) but I found it really quite relaxing. I am pretty pleased with the result for a first time effort and am already planning a second one.

In the next few days this one is going to be heading to my local hairdressing salon, Flawless Hair and Beauty, in Stratford, Victoria. The owner kindly has some of my jewellery in there for sale. So hopefully this bracelet finds a loving home in the near future.

With the warmer weather arriving we will now be daring to allow our arms to see the light of day so why not get yourself or a friend a bracelet. Christmas is coming too so these may be an option for a prezzie! I actually can't remember when I painted this. Maybe around 1999 so it is a bit of an oldie. . I'm a bit notorious for starting my personal projects and then hiffing them aside (...until such time as they wish to co-operate!). I painted it for my parents and it still occupies a wall in their house. It is acrylic on canvas board with loads of texture added in. I have got another old sailing ship painting here at home that I should take a picture of as I don't think I have one of it.

One thing I am pleased to have found is all my music so now I am loaded up in iTunes with many sounds to inspire me. :)

Western Bar Mural

I have been reorganising my photos on my computer and have been finding some oldies. This is a mural that I painted on a Western themed bar in Waiuku, New Zealand. I must have done this in about 2003/2004. I didn't actually think I had any photos of it. Hopefully I will find all sorts of long forgotten goodies as I am going through the old hard drive.

Rough for New Digital Illustration

This is the draft collage for a new digital illustration like the one I did called La Calavera Catrina. When I get a bit of time I will start, I just have a few resumes to finish up for some clients. Doing this will hopefully see me well and truly practised with using my drawing tablet, it shall be my training.

I haven't found suitable arms that are quirky enough to go with the image though so at the moment I will say she is standing with her arms behind her back lol! It will be a rather time consuming project to paint all the elements separately in Photoshop but it should be fun anyway and I will learn a lot so thats good. I haven't thought of a title yet either but that will come to me as I am working on it. Coffee break over!

Cupcakes for Teachers' Day

Friday the 28th of October 2011 is Teachers Day here in Australia. The parents club at Airly Primary School wanted to do something for the teachers to acknowledge their hard work. It was decided cupcakes would be the order of the day and then whole school could enjoy them (hopefully). Wanting to contribute something I volunteered to make them. So this is them...

Now I really hope the boys don't mind the pink but for those particularly staunch ones I have made some sans pink. All the teaching staff are women so pink it was going to be. I am sure as far as the kids go what the cakes taste like is of no significance because generally they just lick the icing off and put them back on the plate hoping they may catch out some inattentaive grown up! Yummy...dribbled on mushy cupcakes! I really want to learn how to do those beautiful cupcakes that you just want to look at because they are so gorgeous and when you do get round to finally eating them it feels a bit decadent. Need lots of practise yet but maybe by the time Ysabelle's birthday comes around I will be a bit better. Now I should clean up the kitchen, I have been rather expressive with the icing, its everywhere (I really should change that rule that you clean up after yourself after baking!).

I am loving working with blues and purples at the moment, I find the combination really soothing. I also incorporated some swirls into the design to give it more of an ocean theme. I am going to put my necklaces up for sale on my blog for a few weeks before I send them away to be sold. Egyptian Link Necklace

Gosh my poor blog is neglected! Just goes to show when you are renovating a house how much of that precious creative time you lose! The renovation has come to a bit of a standstill so I am taking advantage of that to get busy with some projects. I have a new painting underway and have another project I am hoping to start today. This is a bit of an ambitious one as I haven't tried this particular art before but I am eager to give it a go :)

I am still managing to get in the odd piece of jewellery though. I made this one using an Egyptian link, takes a while to create each link but has a great effect, and I love spirals! I used amethysts with the gold wire.

I must have done more art stuff since March surely! Will have to have a did and see what I can find to post up!

A Couple of Necklaces.

I have been making a few bits of jewellery in the evenings. Thought I should start taking photos of them before I send them off to be sold. I am really enjoying working with wire in the pieces and making them a little bit different from what can be found in shops.

The purple piece has been made using amethysts, freshwater pearls, and an assortment of glass beads.
The following is a long single strand necklace. It has an assortment of clay, wood, and acrylic beads with polished stones wrapped in wire.

The 2011 Design Team for Scottie Crafts has been officially announced today and I am fortunate enough to be one of the team along with 7 very talented ladies! I will be working from afar as they are based in New Zealand so hopefully I can represent them well on the "international" side of things! I thought I had better post up a few of my scrap book pages as there is not many on my blog. I haven't done too much in the way of scrapbooking in the last year due to being involved with renovations etc... life has been getting in the way of my hobbies which is entirely unacceptable!! :)

I am currently working on making a book so I will post that up in the next few days when I finish it with step by step photos. I have also finished some more jewellery which I will photograph and post up too.

"Seashore" Necklace

I completed this necklace yesterday. I based the design on a seashore theme. The elements of the necklace represent the ocean (semi-precious stones with metal swirls), sea life (starfish), waves descending on shore (multiple strands comprising of shell, wood, glass, acrylic beads, semi precious stones and cultivated pearls), crashing waves (cluster of beads) and the beach (shell and glass beads).

I have placed this necklace up for auction on Trade Me. All proceeds from this auction will go to Natalie Murphy, a lady who was in the same year at intermediate school as I was. Please click to see her story.

I hope that the auction will not be looked on by prospective buyers as to how cheap they can get the necklace for but rather how much they are willing to offer to help Natalie and her family.

A bit of a catch up!

Can't believe how long it has been since I visited my poor old blog. I am wondering where the heck the year 2010 disappeared! I have been busy with several projects but haven't published anything online. So as a bit of a salute to the year that has gone by here are some of my favourite projects of the last few months...

I designed a CD cover for Shanon Watkins. His debut album is called Smiles and Metaphors.
It is wonderful Sunday afternoon sort of music. I really enjoy listening to the album. This is my cover design:

I also did some illustrations for an author by the name of Cheryl Dunkley who is in the process of publishing a book called Torment at Play. It is a novel about a young boy called Milton who gets relentlessly picked on by the school bully Tyrone. I am not sure on the date of publication as of yet but will advise in due course. There were a dozen illustrations in all and I really enjoyed doing them. The ones inside the book are black and white water colour illustrations.

I did a digital illustration with a Day of the Dead theme. This is for a new art 'zine that will be published also at a yet to be determined date. I loved doing this image, there was a lot of time in digitally creating all the individual elements that made up the collage style image.

I have also started making jewellery and am really enjoying the hands on aspect of this. There are so many beautiful beads out there that I can't wait to get my hands on. I got a new dremel for my birthday so can now design some bone carvings to be used as pendants. I think I need to set up another website for this hobby as I have completed about 40 pieces now all in need of loving homes! I have been inspired to try polyclay by a piece I saw by artist Melissa Grakowsky. New Years resolution (one and only) was to try using polyclay and I attempted a rose last night.

And these are a few of my jewellery pieces...

On a not so arty front I have recently set up another business creating résumés for those in the maritime industry, Maritime Résumé Writing Services. I created the webpage in the beginning of December 2010 and look forward to seeing some successful results with this.

Time to get away from the computer and go play in the river with my kidlets... :-)

New logo

I have had a busy couple of weeks with barely any time to do any projects for myself. Last night I finished a logo for a logging company. They gave me an image that they wanted it based roughly on (a squirrel sort of thing!) and I went from there. They have nicknamed him "Fang"!

I have 2 books which I am working on illustrations for at the moment and a CD cover. Sure is a busy month but I definately am not complaining!

I have been working on a logo this week for a lovely lady, Brooke Patel, who has a photography business, Playful Nature Photography. She specialises in pregnancy, birth and child photography. Sketchy Thursdays Sketch Challenge

Blazing through unfinished projects....

I hauled out my poor wee bear that has been sitting in my cupboard for over a year (studying last year really threw me out with finishing projects). Not sure why I stopped making him really, something would have happened to dishearten me so that he was put away for another day (probably kept snapping the cotton when I was trying to sew in his neck joint or something ridiculous like that... I don't have much patience when things don't go to plan!). I started out with this when I got him out of the box early in the evening....
He is a lovely little 35cm mohair bear but as you can see I ran out of the material when I started cutting him out which is why his legs are felt with fluffly feet. I have a cunning plan for this though, I will make clothes!!!! And no I will not put him away for another year before I make clothes! He was actually supposed to be a "she" but after assembling he clearly cannot be a "she" ... he is a boy! So instead of making the pretty dress with long bloomers etc., I think it is going to have to be overalls or something like that. I did quickly knit him a scarf though as I seemed to have no suitable ribbon in the box of ribbons that I have... why is that you can seemingly have heaps of stuff but sometimes none of it is "just right"? The scarf does suit him I think! So hear he is all complete although bear naked (ahahahaha couldn't resist that one!).....

Sunday Painting

It is a wet gloomy old day today... the perfect weather for inside activities like painting!! I finished a painting that I have had lying around incomplete for months. It's only a little canvas (10" x 8") but it's good to get it done anyway. Didn't have the most steady of hands today for using a paintbrush but anyway it's all good, not much in the way of fine, accurate work required for this one.
I seem to have a bit of a thing for autumn colours at the moment. Wonder if I have enough time to start another project...

Some Scrapping...

I decided it was about time to break the scrapbooking drought... it must have been close to 18 months since making a page! I thought that would give this weeks sketch at Sketchy Thursdays a go. Turns out I am rather rusty on some of my techniques and was feeling all fingers and thumbs doing it but its a start. So this is the layout that I did with a couple of photos of Jack and I when he was a couple of days old.

So here are the steps that I used to make the page...

Step 1: Firstly I edited the photos to the size that I wanted in Photoshop. I also changed the background colour and applied a blur to it.

Step 2: I then selected my papers which in this case were Prima Papers and some natural cardstock.
Step 3: I inked around the edges of the photos and the photo matt.
Step 4: I think did some cutting out with my trusty knife.Step 5: Sprayed some Moon Shadow Van Dyke Brown on the paper and while thinking about where my photos needed to go I added some layers of paper.
Step 6: I started placing elements on the page the way I wanted them... I usually take ages doing this!! I also added some stamps and additional pieces of paper to the layout. Other embellishments included Prima Flowers, butterfly transparencies, buttons and some tags.
Lastly I added some paint just to lighten up where I wanted to put the heading and around the edge of the page and photos. I then went around some of the elements with a journalling pen just to make them look like they "belong" on the page.

Vice has a Mask

I tried something a bit different again today. A well worked over collage... talk about time consuming!!!
I am enjoying watching some tutorials and learning some new techniques. I watched some of Teesha Moore's videos on youtube which show how she does her art journal pages. Basically the process is as follows...

Step 1: Paint some pages (I used my Carandache Crayons which I sprayed with water and work with a large paint brush). Dry thoroughly whether you leave them for a few hours or use the trusty old hairdryer...

Step 2: Spend some time with many magazines (preferably with a coffee) finding interesting pictures and textures. Place border on paper first and then the inside image. I didn't have any subject in mind when I started this is just evolved into something that had to be about the masks people wear.

Step 3: Then start doodling with black and white pens. I also used my Pantone pens, Albrecht Durer chalks, Carandache Crayons. The trick seems to be just to go with it and dont be afraid to make a mistake because really you can't (if you do no one will really know anyway, it is not that sort of artwork).

Step 4: Keep doodling; layering and layering......
Step 5: Find some quotes that may be relevant to your "theme" or write whatever. Write them on - I used pencil first because I am not wonderful with handrwriting!

Hmmm and I just noticed I forgot to doodle the butterfly (but you may not have noticed that if I hadn't pointed it out...!!

So there you go something a bit different, not too bad for a first attempt. Check out Teesha Moores' work, it is pretty quirky, colourful and awesome.

Todays Paintings

I actually finished 4 paintings today... okay they are all similiar and I did them all at the same time so that made it easier and they are only 5"x 7" each. I have had these ceramic hearts that I have been wanting to use for ages that I bought at a market while in Nelson, New Zealand over a year ago.

I am fairly happy with the results especially since they only took me a few hours to do. I took photos during the project so that you could see the process step by step...

Step 1: I sealed the canvases with black acrylic paint and dried.

Step 2: I collaged bits of paper onto the surfaces.
Step 3: I used white stazon ink to stamp on some text, then I started to add some "drippage".
Step 4: I added more paint, sprayed with water, added more paint ensuring I dried the canvases well between colours.
Step 5: I glued a narrow strip of tissue down the side, dried and then sprayed with some Moon Shadow and Glitz Spritz.

Step 6: I darkened up edges and inside with some ink and added some more stamps of script text this time in black. I varnished and then affixed some thread around canvas and attached the ceramic heart.
All done! Now I just need to figure out if I want to keep them or sell them....!

Some Cards....

I did these cards a couple of months ago. I found them stashed in my scrap cupboard. The "Love" themed ones are some of what is in Basic Greys Bittersweet card making kit. Don't know what the heck I am going to do with 8 of them (guess I am set for Valentines day for the next 8 years...!)

This was a wedding themed one that I did, just wanted to use my set of wedding themed stamps..

And this one that is my favourite as it is more my style of art work...

When I was in New Zealand recently my sister showed me Donna Downeys' blog. I was inspired how quickly she could do her work in her art journal (and how she uses "drippage"). I am generally a bit of a snail when it comes to painting, I overthink everything I am doing so using a small canvas, a couple of stamps, a sharpie, some paint, and my carandache crayons I created this in record time...
It's nothing awe inspiring but it is a quick start to get into the creative swing of things again.

I should have properly introduced Fergus in the previous post. Meet Fat Fergus, my constant companion (normally he is looking for food or a warm body to cuddle up to!)...And yes he does have a gimpy squished ear, I didn't slip when I was drawing his ears for the Fat Fergus Designs logo. As he is generally always just about lying on my keyboard when I am trying to work, I named my business after him. Giving him a scratch is a great excuse to have a micro break!

He is a bit of an old boy now, up around 12 years old but still seems to have plenty of life in him yet. Fergus is one of my five cat babies.

Its been a while...

I haven't done the blogging thing for ages... its been well over a year! I thought since I am trying to get my business up and going it is about time to get a bit of additional exposure any way I can. So I have spent the majority of the day setting up the blog and making headers etc. Blogger has changed a bit since I last used it and seems to have a few more functions to play with. I have been browsing websites/blogs in the process (finding links so my blog doesn't look bare and unloved!), must say I am feeling very inspired now by all the gorgeous creations that people put out there. In particular my sister Beverley Cunninghams' scrapping blog, and Teesha Moores' arty blog (now she has a stash of art stuff that makes me green!) So in light of that I decided to clean out and re-organise my craft cupboard tonight.

And look who showed up while I was taking photos... Fat Fergus himself!!!!

As well as feeling inspired, I am now itching to create something but given it is one in the morning I had better just finish up this post and get some sleep as tomorrow is another day.
